Kitchen Photography

As part of my rebranding and web development initiative for Crabtree and Hargreeves, I was looking at how we could improve the photography and promote ourselves as a luxury brand. I noticed that the high-end kitchen companies had photos that looked almost hyper-real, reinforcing the feeling of exclusivity and unobtainable quality that are key factors in luxury branding.

Masking layers

Looking closely I found that the lighting in some of these images would be impossible in the real world -  there was light without a light source and dark areas where there should have been light bleeding from other light sources.

I figured that the technique was achieved by putting the camera on a tripod, setting up multiple light scenarios, taking multiple photos in multiple exposures and then blending them together in Photoshop - using masking layers to pick and choose specific areas where the light interacts with he cabinetry in an interesting way.

We purchased an inexpensive Camera, tripod, lightbox, remote shutter  and I set about photographing some of our completed kitchens in this way to add to our available marketing materials.
